CHANDIGARH: Giving in to pressure from political parties the Punjab Election Commission Thursday postponed the panchayat polls in the state slated for April seven.
With the announcement of postponement of polls, the Commission has also suspended the Model Code of Conduct. Confirming this State Election Commissioner A K Dubey said that the Model Code will now come into force with the announcement of the revised schedule for the polls likely to be held on or before May 15 this year. The Punjab assembly had unanimously passed a resolution two days back, seeking postponement of the panchayat polls in the state in view of the Rabi season and examinations of students. Leader of the house and Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had moved the resolution which was endorsed by the leader of opposition Rajinder Kaur Bhattal of the Congress. The assembly's resolution was handed over to the chief secretary for taking up the matter with the state Election Commission. |
