JALANDHAR: The Punjab police have booked a godman and two others for allegedly duping a family of Rs. 26 lakh on the pretext of arranging marriage of their daughter with an NRI.

While disclosing this Tuesday the police said that the accused identified Jassi Baba Chunnia Wala, Amrit Passi, nephew of Baba and one Harvinderjit Singh, who got married by impersonate to the girl as NRI were booked under section 406, 420 and 120 B of IPC.

The police sources said that a case was registered on complaint Paramjit Kaur, a resident of village Patiala.

Paramjit alleged that the "Baba" took Rs. 26 lakh from the family on the pretext of getting her marriage with an NRI Groom, but later on the marriage was performed with a semi-literate local boy and not NRI.

"After knowing about the fraud, my father could not bear the shock. He suffered a heart attack and died," she said.

Claming Tanda-based Baba, responsible for the fraud, she said that her family was worried about her marriage and as her cousin Balbir Kaur was follower of Baba and introduced the family to him, who assured that he would arrange for an NRI groom for Paramjit.
