BEIJING: As many as 22 people were killed and 10 others injured in an explosion when firecrackers were being destroyed in northwest China's Turpan, in Xinjiang Uygur region.

According to the local officials the authorities of Turpan were trying to dispose the firecrackers in a desert region about eight kms from the city toll gate.

The injured have been hospitalized.
