Khanna factory blast toll reaches 10, owners face criminal charges

LUDHIANA : With two more workers of Sanjiv Agro Solvent Plant at Khanna, succumbing to their  injuries at PGI, Chandigarh on Saturday, the death toll of the major industrial disaster has reached 10. The victims were identified as Ravi Kumar and Govind.

The factory owners  - Sanjiv Aggarwal, Naval Aggarwal,  Sham  Lal Aggarwal  and marketing manager of the firm Harish Kumar, manager Mukesh Kumar and plant incharge Hem Raj  were  booked under sections 304-A, 427 and 120-B of IPC on the complaint of Manjit Singh, working as an electrician in the ill-fated factory.

The Punjab government has also placed the Deputy Director (Boilers) under suspension for dereliction of duty.

SSP Khanna Ravcharan Singh Brar said the factory owners were charged  with being negligent in maintenance of the plant and failure to  take timely  corrective measures for repair of faulty machinery and equipment. No arrest had been made so far, the police said
