LUDHIANA : Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) won the PAU Golden Jubilee Hockey Championship defeating hosts Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) by a convincing margin of 3-0.
In the first half, Jagroop Singh scored the first ggoal for GNDU in 34th minute after the two teams were locked in a fierce battle for supremacy without any success. At half time, the winners were ahead (1-0).
In the second half, Hardeep Singh managed to snaek past the PAU defenders to score the second goal in 41st minute. In 44th minute of the match, Gurjant Singh sounded the board yet again to take GNDU to an almost invincible lead 3-0 which was the score at the end of stipulated period.
Earlier, Panjab University, Chandigarh beat Punjabi University, Patiala by 4-1 to attain the third position in the championship.
The Director Student Welfare Dr Devinder Singh Cheema welcomed the chief guest and the participating teams.
The winning team was felicitated by Padam Shri Charanjit Singh, former Olympian and Captain of Indian Hockey team. Congratulating the winners, he expressed his pride in being a former student of College of Agriculture, before it was established as a University. He further stated that Punjab Agricultural University has been instrumental in providing, besides him, two national players and Olympian captains to India, namely, Prithipal Singh and Ramandeep Singh.
Dr Baldev Singh Dhillon, Vice Chancellor, Punjab Agricultural University honoured Charanjit Singh on this occasion. Dr. Rajinder Singh Bawa, Vice Chancellor, Chandigarh University and a former student of PAU was the Guest of Honor for the championship.
Former hockey players namely, Col Jasjit Singh Randhawa, Ajay Pal Singh Punia, Bhupinder Singh, Sudhir Kumar Malhotra, Arun Kumar, Dr Jasjit Singh Kang, Dr Harpal Singh Bhullar along with contemporary national players were also felicitated.
