LUDHIANA: The Vice-Chancellor of the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Dr Baldev Singh Dhillon has been honoured with “Punjab Ratan” in recognition of his distinguished services to the society at large.
H.S. Brahma, Election Commissioner of India, conferred the 2012 state intellectual honour "Punjab Ratan" upon Dr Dhillon, during the conference on “Challenges of Democracy Today and Role of Intellectuals,” organized at Government Medical College, Chandigarh, recently. All India Conference of Intellectuals organized the conference as a part of 31stAnnual Celebration Year 2012.
An eminent agricultural scientist, Dr Dhillon has served in various capacities such as Director of Research at PAU, Director Seeds, Senior Maize Breeder, and Director of National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (NBPGR), Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).
He has also worked at Maize Biotechnology at University of Honenheim, Stuttgart, Germany. Dr Dhillon’s initiative in creating IPR (Intellectual Property Rights) Committees across colleges has produced good results in terms of filing patents.
Dr Dhillon has earlier been decorated with several prestigious national awards such as Om Parkash Bhasin Award for Science and Technology, Dr Harbhajan Singh Memorial Award, Rafi Ahmad Kidwai Memorial Prize, Recognition by National Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and ICAR Joginder Singh Memorial Award by Indian Society of Genetics and Plant Breeding. He has also been awarded German Academic Exchange Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship.
