Nurses Day celebrated at Rayat Bahra varsity

MOHALI: The Rayat Bahra College of Nursing celebrated International Nurses Day to commemorate the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, pioneer of modern nursing.

Dr Chander K Sarin Director-Principal, Rayat Bahra College of Nursing, speaking on the occasion said that International Council of Nurses had decided in 1974 to celebrate International Nurses Day every year to highlight the importance of nurses’ role in providing the best healthcare services. It is celebrated as a weeklong event, referred as National Nurses Week, in many countries.

She said International Nurses' Day is a great opportunity to celebrate the fantastic work of nurses. The nursing profession is as important today as it has ever been and the day is to celebrate the impact that modern day nurses make on healthcare.

Gurvinder Singh Bahra, Chairman of the Rayat Bahra Group, and Dr Daljit Singh, Vice-Chancellor of the RBU, were present on the occasion and lauded the initiative of the Nursing College authorities in celebrating Nurses Day,

Dr OP Midha Registrar RBU, said that nursing is the largest healthcare profession in the world and nurses are the key of achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDG). Nurses are well trained and educated for maintaining the health and wellness of the patients through all the aspects like psychological, social, etc.

Nursing students participated enthusiastically in the poster making competition on the occasion. Sonaldeep Kaur B.Sc. (N) 2nd year won the first prize, Harmanpreet Kaur B.Sc. (N) 4th year, Meenakshi Bhatti B.Sc. (N) PB 2nd year, Simarnjeet Kaur B.Sc. (N) 4th year, student bagged second, third and consolation prizes respectively.

All the dignitaries participated in the cake cutting ceremony commemorating the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale. The students organised a cultural festival on the occasion which culminated in a dance to the beats of music.
