Three sentenced to life imprisonment till death in Chandigarh auto-rickshaw rape case

CHANDIGARH: A Chandigarh court has awarded life imprisonment till death to three concvicts of gang rape, all hailing from Uttar Pradesh. The court has also imposed a fine of Rs.2.05 lakhs on each of them out which Rs.2 lakh will be paid to the victim.

They were convicted for raping a 22 year old girl who took ride in an auto-rickshaw while returning from her office. The victim who hailed from Dehradun lived in Mohali and working in a office in Chandigarh.

The incident took place on November 17, 2017 when the girl boarded Auto Rickshaw from sector 37 for Mohali. Two other accused were also sitting in the auto. They took the auto-rickshaw to a deserted place of sector 53 forest area. They forcibly took the girl into forest area and took turns to rape her.

The three convicts Mohammend Irfan(28) who drove the auto-rickshaw.ohammed Garib(21) and Kismat Ali(21) were arrested by police after processing CCTV camera footage. The auto-rickshaw was seen fuelling at the petrol pump of sector 43. The police identified the main accused from his T-shirt which was donated by a NGO to auto-rickshaw pullers for publicity. The NGO had noted the name and address of the accused.

In har hitting judgment, the additional district and session judge Poonam R Joshi noted, " How unfortunate are the mothers who gave birth to such beasts and kept them close to their bosom with the hope thay they would be the saviours of their future. Little did they know that their sons would not only bring bad name to the family but to the society at large."

The judge also observed suffering of the victim and said  her trauma cant be overlooked.. She has sufferred not only physical assault but has been emotionally traumatised too. The judge appreciated the victim that she contrested the case despite knowing that it would haunt her psychologically. The judge further said that any mercy for the convicts would be misplaced and would be mockery of the justice. The judge said that this judgement would be a deterrent for the others.

The main accused Mohammed Irfan is married. He has two daughters and two sons. Mohammed Garib and Kismat Ali are also married without any kids.
