CHANDIGARH: A high-powered delegation of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), led by Kultar Singh Sandhwan (MLA, Kotkapura), Amarjit Singh Sandoa (MLA, Ropar) and Jai Kishan Rori (MLA, Garhshanker) filed a petition in the National Green Tribunal (NGT), New Delhi, seeking action against Punjab government for its maintaining stoic silence over the pollution of river waters in the state, leaving a vast majority of people falling prey to certain life-threatening diseases, like cancer, asthma, besides certain skin diseases.

In a statement issued after filing of the petition, Sandhwan said that they had been flagging the issue for a pretty long time now. In this regard, he informed that a delegation of the party MLAs, accompanied by deputy leader of opposition in Punjab Vidhan Sabha Bibi Sarabjit Kaur Manuke and others, had visited Harike Pattan head works, recently, to take stock of the ground situation.

Accusing the government for the sorry state of affairs, Sandhwan said that due to the insensitivity on the part of the government, people living in close proximity of the rivers in the region, were forced to drink water which, he said, was not fit for human consumption. This had left, he said, the harried people prone to certain life-threatening diseases, like cancer, asthma and other water-borne diseases.

Sandhwan further said that they had been taking up the issue surrounding the health of the people, including the who’s who of the dispensation helming the affairs but to avail and the problem continued as before. Expressing displeasure over the government’s failure to check the free flow of pollutants and industrial waste into the river waters consumed by the residents of the nearby areas. This, he said, had not only pushed the pollution levels further but had also affected the aquatic life in the region.

Sandhwan lamented that having run from pillar to post, they were left with no option but to knock the doors of NGT and file a petition seeking action against the sleepy Captain Amarinder Singh government holding the fort in the state for its keeping mum over the issue concerning health and wellness of the people of the state.
