If Kejriwal govt can reduce power tariff further, why can’t Captain Govt in Punjab? : Meet Hayer

CHANDIGARH: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Punjab, has described the Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi Govt’s decision to cutting on electricity rate further as a welcome step, saying that if it (Delhi govt) could reduce power tariff there during its 4-year tenure, why can’t Captain Amarinder Singh replicate the people-friendly Delhi model in the state to stop open ‘loot’ of the peoples’ hard-earned money they were paying in the shape hefty power bills.

In a statement issued from party headquarters here on Thursday, party MLA and Bijli Morcha Coordinator, Meet Hayer informed that in the wake of the revised power tariff rates announced by Delhi government for the year 2019-20, all category of consumers were, on an average, set to save Rs 750.

The AAP leader further informed that the Delhi government even after purchasing 100 per cent power from private companies was  providing it to consumers at an affordable rate, cheapest rate in the country, saying that Punjab was producing sufficient power on its own but people were forced to pay exorbitant rate  due to the presence of power mafia in the state enjoying political patronage.

Accusing the subsequent governments for the Himalayan botch up, Hayer said that the erstwhile SAD-BJP government had entered into anti-Punjab power pacts with the private power players tasked with supplying 77 per cent power to the state, saying that the state was supposed to cough up a whopping sum of rupees 2,800 crore per year for the next 25 years under the pact burning a deep whole in everybody’s pockets. He trolled the Captain Government on reneging on the poll promise it peddled among the people to scrap all power pacts and end power mafia in the state. Hayer lamented that nothing had come out of the discourse even as more than two and a half years of their current tenure had rolled by.

Meet Hayer informed that under the ongoing Bijli Morcha spearheaded by the party to bail out people of the state paying hefty power bills, regular meetings were being held at the Assembly segment level where people were made aware of the high power tariff people were paying in Punjab in sharp contrast with the Delhi’s people-friendly rate, perhaps cheapest in the country, saying village level power committees were being set up to make Bijli Morcha a huge success.
