CHANDIGARH: Senior leader of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Leader of Opposition Harpal Singh Cheema, has demanded resignation of Punjab Jails Minister, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, who also holds the Home Affairs portfolio, over the incidents of violent clashes in Ludhiana jail, leading to the death of two of its inmates while half a dozen prisoners managed to escape during the clashes.

In a statement issued from party headquarters in Chandigarh on Thursday, Cheema said that criminal activities in the state had escalated, stating that the law and order situation had gone for a toss, leaving the law abiding citizens in the state to live in an atmosphere of constant fear.

The AAP leader further said that this was the third major incident of violence, which came close on the heels of the alleged ‘murder’ of Dera Premi Mohinderpal Bittu in Nabha jail, accused in the incident of desecration, adding that the latest Ludhiana jail incident had brought back chilling memories of similar incidents of violence at Kapurthala and Gurdaspur Jails. They said that nothing seemed to have changed for the better since the Badals were ousted. He said that, instead of improving, the law order machinery had worsened since.

Cheema accused the top political guns in the state of worsening the situation, saying that help of political leaders and police administration mafia lords and gangsters were calling the shots from the jails, like during the   Akali-BJP regime.

Cheema said that like the SAD-BJP government in the state Captain Government was dragging its feet on taming the ‘mafia raj’ allegedly operating from jails under the protective patronage of the political godfathers.
