9 dead, 49 hurt in Nahan bus mishap

SOLAN: Nine persons were killed and 49 injured when the bus they were travelling in plunged into a river near Dadahu in Sirmaur district around 3:45 am onSunday.
The bus, which was en route from Shri Renukaji-Nahan, broke the railing erected along the bridge and plunged into the river. The exact cause of the accident was yet to be ascertained, said DSP Babita Rana.

Babita Rana said preliminary inquiries revealed that the bus was running late for its destination and was in high speed. The bus was also overcrowded with passengers.
The victims were rushed to Dadahu hospital for preliminary treatment from where 43 were referred to Nahan. Being a rocky surface with little water in the river, the victims suffered fatal head injuries.

Four persons, including a couple Bhagwanti and Satya Ram, who hail from Jaitak village, and another women Uma Devi, were killed on the spot while one person was yet to be identified. Another five persons, who were referred to Dr YS Parmar Medical College at Nahan, were declared brought dead.

Besides this, 43, who had suffered injuries, were admitted to the Nahan medical college. Two injured were also referred to the PGI, Chandigarh, as their condition was stated to be serious. Among those injured was also a 12-year girl who was yet to be identified and a child who was unable to disclose his identity.

Preliminary reports indicate that the bus was overloaded and was in speed.

Little preparedness was noticed in the Nahan hospital when the injured arrived around 6:30 pm with the scant staff and unavailability of stretchers to carry the injured drawing flak from the locals.

Deputy Commissioner, Sirmaur, Lalit Jain said Rs 20,000 to those killed and Rs 10,000 to the injured has been granted. The SDM has been directed to conduct a magisterial inquiry into this accident and will submit his report within 20 days.

He said a team of 25 doctors were treating the patients and he was monitoring the situation in the hospital.
