CHANDIGARH: A day after AICC general secretary PC Chacko announced following his meeting with senior leaders of the party from the state that the Congress will not contest mayoral polls on party symbol, Ashok Tanwar, state president of the party, said that the issue was still unresolved.

Tanwar, who met Chacko and some senior leaders of the Congress in the AICC headquarters in Delhi this evening, said a large majority of the party workers in Haryana wanted the elections to be contested on the party symbol and the party high command had been informed about their views.
“Thousands of Congress workers across the state have been contacted through the Shakti App to ascertain their view on this issue and a huge majority of them want the elections to be contested on the party symbol,” Tanwar said speaking to The Tribune this evening.

He said during his meeting with senior party leaders today, he had been assured that the party high command would take a decision respecting the sentiments of the workers.
He refuted reports that the party had already taken a decision not to contest the polls on the party symbol.

Yesterday, the AICC general secretary in-charge for Delhi PC Chacko, who had been assigned to take a call on the issue after meeting with senior party leaders from the state, had said that the party would not contest the upcoming mayoral polls on the party symbol.

Chacko had said that the party had never contested the municipal corporation polls in the state on the party symbol in the past either.

He had held discussions on the issue with former CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Rajya Sabha member Kumari Sejla, Congress Legislative Party leader Kiran Choudhry, besides Tanwar and had also sought views of some other leaders like AICC media in charge Randeep Surjewala and former Assembly Speaker Kuldeep Sharma, who were in Rajasthan for campaigning for the Congress candidates there on phone.

“The issue is still open and I am sure that the party high command will take a decision very soon based on the sentiments of the party workers ascertained on the Congress party’s Shakti App,” Tanwar said.

Nominations for the municipal corporation polls begin tomorrow.
