A 15-year-old Class 10 student allegedly died by suicide at her home in Vishnu Nagar on Rahon Road in Ludhiana on October 31. Her body was found hanging from a ceiling fan in her room. The girl’s family has alleged that a 30-year-old woman was pressuring her to marry her. Police have arrested the woman following a complaint by the teenager’s father.

According to the police, the accused allegedly told investigators that the girl had agreed to marry her. The woman reportedly promised the teenager that she would undergo gender transition once the girl turned 18, after which they would get married.

Contact began on Instagram

Police investigation revealed that the teenager had met the accused a few months ago when she visited a tattoo studio with her brother. The woman, a resident of Gopal Nagar, allegedly came into contact with the girl at the studio.

A few days after their meeting, the two reportedly began communicating on Instagram. The teenager allegedly used her father’s mobile phone to secretly message the woman. Her family later became aware of their communication.

According to police, the accused allegedly told the girl to wait until she became an adult, promising to undergo gender transition before marrying her.

Case registered under BNS Section 108

The girl’s father, Sunil Kumar, said his daughter allegedly died by suicide at around 5 pm on October 31. He works at a factory and has another younger daughter.

Following his complaint, police registered a case under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) on November 1.

Investigating Officer Sub-Inspector Sukhwinder Singh confirmed that the accused woman had been arrested and was being questioned.

Police also said the investigation had revealed allegations that the woman had previously approached one or two other girls in a similar manner and pressured them into same-sex marriage.
