The alleged psycho killer from Amritsar, who spread panic in Uttar Pradesh’s Chandauli district by carrying out three murders within just 26 hours, was shot dead in a police encounter late Monday night.
According to Chandauli Superintendent of Police Akash Patel, the accused Gurpreet Singh was taken by police to recreate the crime scenes linked to the murders. During the process, he allegedly snatched a pistol from a police officer and tried to escape after opening fire.
Police retaliated, and Gurpreet sustained bullet injuries to his head and chest. He was rushed to the district hospital, where doctors declared him dead during treatment.
Same Pattern in All Three Murders
Police investigations revealed that all three killings followed a similar pattern. The victims were shot directly in the temple at close range.
The first murder took place on Sunday morning around 7 am inside a passenger train, where a young man was shot dead.
In the second incident, around 2 am Sunday night, another passenger travelling in the Jammu Tawi Express was shot dead near the train’s washroom.
The third and most shocking incident happened on Monday morning at around 8:30 am. Gurpreet allegedly entered a private hospital and shot a woman lying on a bed by placing a pistol against her temple.
Crowd Caught Him After Hospital Murder
After the hospital shooting, locals chased and caught the accused while he was trying to flee. Angry people thrashed him before handing him over to the police.
As he was injured in the beating, police first got him medically treated. During interrogation, Gurpreet reportedly made shocking statements that stunned investigators.
“I am the king of my mind. After drinking alcohol, I lose control. I wander around and do whatever comes to my mind. I have killed not one, but two-three people,” he allegedly told police.
Officials said he later confessed to all three murders during questioning.
Retired Army Man from Amritsar
Police said Gurpreet Singh was originally from Amritsar and had retired from the Army nearly six years ago. He reportedly had no permanent address and moved from place to place.
Though married, he did not share any information about his wife or children with investigators.
PDDU Nagar Circle Officer Arun Kumar Singh said Gurpreet used to become violent after consuming alcohol and frequently got into arguments with people.
“Two of the murders seem to have happened after disputes. Prima facie, the accused appeared mentally unstable,” the officer said.
