In a significant development ahead of next year’s Punjab Assembly elections, the ABVP-SOI alliance has emerged victorious in the Punjab University (PU) student council elections, with ABVP candidate Ankit Bidhan elected as the new President.
Bidhan received the backing of the Shiromani Akali Dal’s student wing, the Student Organisation of India (SOI). This marks his first victory as president of the PU student council.
The result assumes significance as the alliance between ABVP and SOI comes ahead of the Punjab Assembly elections scheduled for next year. In the previous election, ABVP’s Gauravveer Sohal had won the president’s post, but he did not have the support of the Akali Dal.
In the latest PU student elections, the Aam Aadmi Party’s student wing finished second, while the Congress-affiliated NSUI secured third place. The final vote tally and winning margin are yet to be announced.
