Bollywood actor Imran Khan, nephew of actor Aamir Khan has reportedly been issued a notice by Mumbai Police directing him to leave India by October 28.
According to reports by news agency ANI, the police issued a Leave India Notice (LIN) to Imran following his participation in a protest held at Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan on October 10.
The demonstration was organised over a demand for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Imran was reportedly detained by police during the protest.
According to media reports, the notice states that Imran is not an Indian citizen but participated in the demonstration. His participation has reportedly prompted the police action.
According to media reports, BJP leader Kirit Somaiya filed a complaint alleging that Imran Khan is an American citizen and does not hold Indian citizenship. Somaiya reportedly claimed that the actor’s participation in the protest violated applicable legal provisions.
A complaint was lodged at Mumbai’s Gamdevi Police Station over an alleged violation of the Foreigners Act. Police reportedly forwarded the complaint to the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) for further examination.
Media reports state that Imran Khan holds an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card. The OCI scheme provides eligible foreign citizens of Indian origin with certain immigration and residency benefits, subject to applicable laws and regulations.
However, OCI cardholders are not Indian citizens and cannot vote in Indian elections or contest elections. Article 19 of the Indian Constitution guarantees freedoms, including freedom of speech and expression and the right to assemble peacefully, to Indian citizens.
The reported notice has brought attention to the legal provisions governing the activities of foreign nationals and OCI cardholders in India. Further details regarding the notice and Imran Khan’s response were not available in the reports cited.
