In a major security operation ahead of Independence Day, Amritsar Rural Police on Friday morning arrested four alleged members of the Khalistan Liberation Force (KLF) from the Ajnala area.
According to police sources, the accused were allegedly preparing to carry out a terror incident during the Independence Day period. Investigators suspect that the group had earlier been involved in attacks on police stations and other police buildings using bottle bombs and grenades.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the four accused allegedly acted on the directions of Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI and were involved in a bottle-bomb attack on the Chamiyari police post under Ajnala police station on the night of July 23. No casualties were reported in the incident, although senior police officials have not officially confirmed the attack on the police post.
Police are also probing whether the same group was involved in the murder of ASI Joga Singh and the explosion outside the Army’s Khasa area in Amritsar.
The arrested suspects have been identified as Karanbir Singh, Mandeep Singh, Sukhdeep Singh, and Pradeep Singh, all residents of the Ramdass area of Amritsar district.
All four are currently being interrogated, and police sources said that several important leads have emerged during questioning. The accused are expected to be produced before a local court after 2 pm, where police will seek their remand for further investigation.
A senior police officer, possibly the DIG, is likely to address a press conference later in the day regarding the arrests and the ongoing investigation.
