Punjab government has taken a major step towards ensuring the dignity, safety and well-being of senior citizens with the launch of the Baba Phool Government Old Age Home in Tapa, Barnala district.
Built at a cost of Rs 8.21 crore, the modern 72-bed facility was inaugurated on April 9, 2025. Currently, 16 elderly residents are staying at the home, where they are provided free accommodation, food and healthcare services.
Social Security, Women and Child Development Minister Dr Baljit Kaur said the government is committed to providing senior citizens with a safe, comfortable and respectful environment. She said the objective is not just to provide shelter but also to ensure that elderly residents receive care and feel a sense of belonging.
The facility offers comfortable dormitories, nutritious meals, clothing, medical services, a library, gardening space, indoor games and recreational activities. Special yoga sessions are also organised twice a week to support the physical and mental well-being of the residents.
Dr Baljit Kaur appealed to destitute elderly people and those in need of proper care to contact their respective District Social Security Officer to complete the admission process.
She also urged the public, Panchayati Raj institutions, local bodies and social organisations to identify elderly people requiring assistance and help them access the available facilities.
