Border Security Force (BSF) has seized around 15 kg of heroin, with an estimated international market value of nearly ₹100 crore, from a constable posted with an anti-drone team in Punjab. The accused was arrested after the BSF received information that he was allegedly planning to dispose of the drug consignment brought across the border using a drone.
The accused has been identified as Karanbir Singh, son of Numberdar Ranjit Singh and a resident of Bhuse village under the Sarai Amanat Khan police station area. He had earlier served as a munshi at the Sursingh police post under the Bhikhiwind police station. Around one-and-a-half months ago, he was transferred to the anti-drone party.
Anti-drone teams are deployed to monitor and intercept suspected narcotics consignments dropped by drones coming from across the international border.
According to the information, the BSF's 115th Battalion received a tip-off that a large consignment of heroin delivered through a drone was allegedly in the possession of the constable, who was preparing to dispose of it.
Acting on the information, the BSF personnel set up a checkpoint near the Lahian Pul drain in the jurisdiction of Sarai Amanat Khan police station. During the operation, the constable was intercepted and apprehended with a plastic bag.
A search of the bag led to the recovery of 15 packets of heroin. The total weight of the seized consignment was found to be around 15 kg.
The BSF took the accused into custody and initiated further legal proceedings. Police and BSF officials have launched an investigation to establish the source of the contraband and determine whether others were involved in the alleged drug trafficking operation.
A team from the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) also reached the spot and began questioning the accused. Further details are awaited as the investigation progresses.
