Chandigarh’s 20-year-old canoeist Jaganbir Singh Bajwa has brought laurels to India and Punjab by winning two bronze medals at the Asian Canoe Marathon Championship held in Japan.
Jaganbir produced an outstanding performance in both the 3.4 km and 10 km events, finishing third in each race. Athletes from China secured the top position, while Vietnamese competitors finished second.
The achievement is being hailed as a major milestone for the young paddler, who was among the youngest participants in the prestigious Asian-level competition. Competing against experienced international athletes, Jaganbir displayed remarkable skill, stamina, and determination to secure podium finishes in both events.
Coaches hail remarkable achievement
Jaganbir’s coach and gold medal-winning athlete Ravinder Singh expressed pride over the performance, calling it a moment of honour for the athlete’s family, Punjab, and the country.
“Winning two medals at such a young age in a prestigious Asian championship is a remarkable achievement. Jaganbir has been training with dedication for a long time, and his hard work and commitment have now been rewarded on the international stage,” Ravinder Singh said.
He added that the double bronze medals reflect the youngster’s bright future in the sport and his potential to achieve even greater success internationally.
Deepak Kumar Singh, coach of the Indian team and Chairman of Canoe Marathon India, also congratulated Jaganbir on his success. He said the athlete’s achievement was the result of continuous hard work, discipline, and strong support from his family.
“Jaganbir’s dedication has been exceptional, and we are confident that he will win bigger medals for India in future international competitions,” he said.
Under Deepak Kumar Singh’s guidance, the Indian team performed impressively during the championship, with the coaching staff playing a crucial role in preparing the athletes for high-level international competition.

Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema congratulated Jaganbir Singh Bajwa for his double bronze medal feat in Japan.
He said the young athlete had made Punjab and India proud through his outstanding international performance.
“Winning medals at a prestigious event like the Asian Canoe Marathon Championship at such a young age is a matter of immense pride. Jaganbir’s achievement is inspirational for other young athletes, and I am confident that he will continue to bring greater honours to the country and Punjab in the future,” Cheema said.
Finance Minister also extended congratulations to Jaganbir’s family members and coaching staff, acknowledging their contribution to the athlete’s success and describing the achievement as a proud moment for the entire state.
