Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Friday paid rich tributes to legendary freedom fighter Shaheed Udham Singh on his 87th martyrdom day and reiterated the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Government’s commitment to realising the aspirations of the national heroes who sacrificed their lives for India’s freedom from British rule.
Addressing a state-level function organised at Sunam, the birthplace of Shaheed Udham Singh, the Chief Minister said the revolutionary’s unparalleled patriotism and supreme sacrifice would continue to inspire generations to serve the nation selflessly.
Earlier, Bhagwant Mann laid a wreath and offered floral tributes at the Shaheed Udham Singh Memorial.
In a message posted on X, the Chief Minister said:
“On the martyrdom day of the great revolutionary Shaheed Udham Singh Ji, who avenged the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, I pay my humble tributes to him. His unparalleled sacrifice for the honour and dignity of the nation will forever remain a great source of inspiration for all of us.”
Speaking at the event, Mann said it was a matter of immense pride to participate in the solemn occasion honouring one of India’s greatest martyrs.
“Shaheed Udham Singh made the supreme sacrifice for the freedom of our country. India’s freedom struggle witnessed countless sacrifices by brave sons and daughters of the nation, who laid down their lives to free the country and build an egalitarian society committed to the welfare of the weaker and underprivileged sections,” he said.
Chief Minister recalled the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, in which hundreds of unarmed Indians were killed under the administration of the then Lieutenant Governor of Punjab, Michael O’Dwyer. He said Shaheed Udham Singh avenged the massacre by bringing O’Dwyer to justice at Caxton Hall in London.
“Today, we have gathered here to express our deepest gratitude to this great patriot while commemorating the day on which he embraced martyrdom,” Mann said.
Describing the memorial as a sacred place, the Chief Minister noted that people from across India and abroad visit Sunam to pay homage and draw inspiration from the extraordinary life of Shaheed Udham Singh.
“This true son of the soil displayed exemplary courage by eliminating Michael O’Dwyer, the principal perpetrator of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. His supreme sacrifice strengthened India’s resolve to overthrow British imperialism,” he added.
Mann further said that the sacrifice of Shaheed Udham Singh would continue to inspire the youth to dedicate themselves to the selfless service of the nation and that the country would always remain indebted to the iconic martyr.
Senior AAP leader and Punjab in-charge Manish Sisodia, Cabinet Minister Aman Arora and several other dignitaries were also present on the occasion.
