Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini unfurled the national flag in Hansi on Saturday as the state celebrated the 80th Independence Day with patriotic programs and cultural events across the state.
Independence Day function in Hansi was held amid heightened security after local villagers protested against the program earlier in the morning. The situation escalated into a confrontation between protesters and police, with reports of stone-pelting and a lathi-charge.
In view of the tension, security arrangements were strengthened around the venue, and several people were stopped from entering the program area.
During his address, Chief Minister Saini announced ₹5 lakh for the children who presented cultural programs during the Independence Day celebrations. He also announced a holiday on Monday, giving residents an additional day off.
The celebrations in other parts of Haryana were also affected by weather conditions. Rain was reported in Panipat and Yamunanagar, where parades were conducted amid showers. In Bhiwani, waterlogging at the Bhim Stadium ground forced authorities to shift the program to an indoor venue.
Meanwhile, several students fell ill due to heat during Independence Day functions in Nuh and Narnaul. In Nuh, around half a dozen children complained of dizziness and weakness and were taken to the Community Health Centre with the help of ambulances.
In Narnaul, several students reportedly became unwell after sitting in the sun. Teachers shifted them to a tent, gave them water and provided immediate assistance. Their parents were later called, and the students were sent home.
The state also honoured 11 Haryana Police personnel with police medals for distinguished and meritorious services. Sub-Inspector Sushila Kaushik of the State Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau received the President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service.
Ten other police personnel, including IPS officer Nazneen Bhasin, DSP Jitesh Malhotra, Inspectors Rajiv Ranjan and Rajbir Singh, Sub-Inspectors Sanjeev Kumar, Sandeep and Ramphal, and ASIs Pawan Kumar, Praveen Kumar and Anil Kumar, were awarded Police Medals for Meritorious Service.
