Political activity in Punjab has started intensifying well ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections, with the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) making a significant move in the Jalandhar North Assembly constituency.
In a major setback to the Congress, prominent youth leader Anshuman Kalia joined the Aam Aadmi Party along with a large number of supporters. The induction took place in the presence of AAP Punjab president Aman Arora and was led by Jalandhar North constituency in-charge and newly appointed Mayor Vineet Dhir.
Anshuman Kalia is the son of late former councillor Vicky Kalia, who had considerable influence in the local political landscape. His decision to switch sides is being seen as an important development in Jalandhar North, a constituency that is expected to witness a keen political contest in the run-up to the 2027 elections.
AAP leaders welcomed Kalia into the party, expressing confidence that his entry would strengthen the party's grassroots presence in the constituency. The move is also being viewed as part of AAP's broader strategy to consolidate its support base across urban constituencies in Punjab ahead of the next Assembly polls.
The Congress has not yet issued an official response to Kalia's resignation and subsequent induction into AAP.
