A 40-year-old woman was killed and two children were injured after a family was struck by a train while crossing a railway bridge over the Western Yamuna Canal in Yamunanagar, Haryana.
The deceased has been identified as Kavita Devi, a resident of Banwaripur village in Bihar’s Begusarai district. Her 12-year-old son and seven-year-old daughter also sustained injuries in the incident.
Kavita Devi and her husband, Ramshagun Chaurasia, had been living in the Bari Majra area with their three children. Ramshagun had arrived in Yamunanagar from Bihar around two months ago and was working at a plywood factory.
The family had recently travelled to their native village in Bihar and returned by train on Tuesday. While returning, they reportedly chose to cross the railway bridge to take a shorter route.
As they were crossing, a train suddenly approached on the railway line from Jagadhri towards Saharanpur. The family panicked, and the husband and children jumped to the side to save themselves. Kavita, however, was struck by the train and died at the spot.
Investigating officer SI Satyavir Singh said the accident occurred while the family was crossing the railway bridge.
