A 65-year-old spare parts trader allegedly died by suicide after shooting himself at his residence in Golden Enclave, Firozpur, on Monday morning.

The deceased was identified as Gurkirpal Singh Chawla, who ran a spare parts shop at Bagdadi Gate Chowk. According to his brother, Gagandeep Singh, Gurkirpal woke up around 4 am as usual, took a bath and recited prayers.

After drinking water, he went into his room and locked the door from inside. When he did not come out for a long time, the family became concerned. They opened the door and found him lying dead inside the room.

Family members said there had been no apparent dispute, domestic tension or other major problem at home, leaving them unable to determine what prompted him to take the extreme step.

Gagandeep Singh said Gurkirpal had been undergoing treatment for a brain-related illness at PGI Chandigarh and had undergone an operation around a year ago.

Gagandeep said Gurkirpal's wife had been staying in Moga for around five months to attend a Gurbani course. She had returned to Firozpur for two days last week to collect medicines before going back to Moga.

Police from City Police Station reached the spot after receiving information about the incident. Investigating officer ASI Gurmeet Singh and his team examined the scene.

Police said all aspects of the case were being investigated. The body has been kept in the mortuary and will be sent for post-mortem after other family members arrive. Further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
