In a daylight robbery, unidentified miscreants allegedly held a former woman sarpanch hostage inside her house and robbed her in Wadala Bangar village, under the Kalanour block of Gurdaspur district, on Saturday morning.
The robbers allegedly snatched the woman's gold earrings, stole ₹25,000 in cash and fled with the digital video recorder (DVR) of the CCTV cameras installed at the house.
Upon receiving information about the incident, Kalanour SHO Amandeep Singh reached the spot with a police team. After inspecting the scene, the police initiated an investigation into the matter.
According to former sarpanch Jasbir Kaur Kahlon, wife of Jasbir Singh, her two sons, daughter-in-law and daughter live in Canada and Italy, and she was alone at home. She had spent Friday night at her neighbours' house.
Jasbir Kaur said that when she returned home at around 6 am on Saturday, two men were standing near the main gate. She claimed that the same men had visited her house on Friday evening as well. The men allegedly told her that they had come from jail and also spoke about her husband, before going up to the first floor of the house.
She said she then went to prepare tea. While she was making tea, the men allegedly removed her earrings, confined her to a room and searched the house. They reportedly stole ₹25,000 kept in a cupboard, which she had saved through a committee-based savings arrangement.
The accused also asked about the CCTV cameras and subsequently took away their DVR.
The woman further claimed that she heard a sound resembling a firecracker during the incident.
Jasbir Kaur has appealed to the Gurdaspur Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) and senior district administration officials to apprehend the unidentified robbers at the earliest and take legal action against them.
The police are investigating the incident and are working to establish the circumstances surrounding the robbery.
