A man closely associated with gangster Sukha Kahlon was shot dead in Kapurthala in the early hours of Friday after unidentified assailants opened indiscriminate fire at his car.
The victim, identified as Gurpreet Singh alias Gopi, a resident of Jairampur village, was sitting in the driver’s seat when the attackers arrived and fired multiple rounds at the vehicle. He was hit by bullets and collapsed on the seat, dying on the spot. The car’s front windshield was also found riddled with bullet marks.
Gopi was reportedly the right-hand man of Sukha Kahlon and the last remaining witness in his murder case. While other witnesses had already turned hostile, he had stood firm, making his killing significant in the context of the ongoing gang rivalry.
The incident took place near Avon Palace on GT Road in the Dhilwan area. Upon receiving information, police from Dhilwan police station rushed to the scene and took the body into custody. It was later shifted to the Civil Hospital Kapurthala mortuary around 3:45 AM.
Meanwhile, a gangster identified as Donny Bal claimed responsibility for the murder through a social media post. In the post, he alleged that the victim used to intimidate his associates and issued a warning to others.
Notably, Sukha Kahlon himself was shot dead on January 21, 2015, by rival gang leader Vicky Gounder and his associates while being transported from a court in Jalandhar to Nabha jail. Police have launched an investigation and are working to identify and apprehend the attackers.
