Panic gripped the Hisar court complex on Thursday afternoon after two armed assailants allegedly opened indiscriminate fire at gangster Vinod Kana, a resident of Thurana village, killing him near the court’s main gate. Another person was seriously injured in the firing and was rushed to a nearby private hospital for treatment.

According to eyewitness advocate Sukhdeep, the incident took place around 2:45 pm when lawyers and other people were returning after lunch. The attackers allegedly fired around 15 to 20 rounds within nearly 30 seconds.

The assailants first opened fire at Vinod Kana in the court parking area. They then reportedly chased him towards the main gate and continued firing, resulting in his death at the spot.

Police said two attackers were involved in the incident. One of them was apprehended at the spot, while efforts are underway to arrest the second suspect. Preliminary investigation suggests that the attackers may be linked to the notorious Panu gang. Police suspect that gang rivalry and an old enmity could be behind the killing.

Senior police officers and a large police contingent reached the court complex soon after the incident. Wireless messages were sent to all checkpoints across the district, and an intensive checking operation was launched to trace the absconding attacker.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting and the exact motive behind the targeted killing.
