Giani Harpreet Singh is appointed acting Jathedar of Akal Takht

AMRITSAR: Giani Harpreet Singh Jathedar of Takht Damdama Sahib Talwandi Sabo has been appointed acting Jathedar of Akal Takht after the resignation of Giani Gurbachan Singh was accepted by executive committee of SGPC which met here on Monday. 45 year old Giani Harpreet Singh os post graduate and doing his PhD from Punjabi University Patiala.

Giani Gurbachan Singh former Jathedar had resigned citing poor health but his ouster was made to soothen the Sikh mindset after many controversial decisions taken by him. It is understood that he had taken many decisions under influence of Badal family which controls SGPC. Giani Gurbachan Singhfaced wrath of the Sikh community for exonerating dera chief Gurnmeet Ram Rahim Singh in blasphemy case of 2015. Later he rescinded the decision following criticism. Giani Gurbachan Singh who stood on week moral grounds also apologised for his wrong doings.

Justice Ranjit Singh report on sacrilege cases has also mentioned the cause behind several cases of sacrilege of Guru Grnath Sahib. The report had pointed out the role of Parkash Singh Badal and his son Sukhbir Singh Badal for forcing the Jathedar to grant pardon to dera chief.

Gobind Singh Longowal President of SGPC said that regular Jathedar would be appointed after consulting other Sikh organisations. He said that Giani Harpreet Singh is given temporary charge of the post.

The acting Jathedar was appointed Granthi in a Gurdwara in Mukatsar Sahib 15 years back. Hving proximity with Badal family, he rose to ranks very fast and became Jathedar of Takht Kesgarh Sahib. He is son of a Granthi hailing from Gidderbaha town in Mukatsar district. He is doing PhD on the topic . Cocept of ultimate truth in holy Quran and Guru Granth Sahib. He has also translated holy Quran into Punjabi.

In an interview with a newspaper Giani Harpreet Singh said that he was leaving it to almighty to help to sail through these touch times on Sikh panth. He said that he would seek support of Sikh bodies to sort out the issues.
