A 35-year-old man allegedly died by suicide after hanging himself from the ceiling at his residence in Akalgarh Kalan village under Sidhwan Bet police station limits in Ludhiana district.

The deceased has been identified as Amarjit Singh, also known as Deepu Akalgarh. According to police, the incident came to light on Saturday morning when his family members found his body hanging inside the house.

Police from Sidhwan Bet station reached the spot, brought the body down, and completed inquest proceedings before sending it to the Civil Hospital in Ludhiana for post-mortem examination. No suicide note was recovered from the scene.

Based on the statement of the deceased’s wife, police have initiated proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC. She told authorities that Amarjit had been under significant mental stress since his recent release on bail from Ludhiana Central Jail, where he was lodged in connection with an extortion attempt case.

The family had been sleeping in the courtyard on Friday night due to warm weather. At some point during the night, Amarjit reportedly went inside the house and hanged himself. In the morning, his wife discovered the body and immediately informed the village panchayat and police.

She stated that she does not suspect any foul play and confirmed that the family had no known enmity with anyone.

Station House Officer Inspector Gurdeep Singh said that further action will depend on the findings of the post-mortem report. If any suspicious circumstances emerge, a case will be registered and investigated accordingly.

Notably, Amarjit had earlier been in the spotlight after helping authorities crack down on drug peddlers following the death of his brother due to a suspected drug overdose. However, he later became involved in disputes and faced an extortion case along with two journalists.
