In a significant development, former cricketer and Rajya Sabha MP Harbhajan Singh, who recently switched from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court raising concerns over his security arrangements.
The petitioner urged the court to direct the Punjab government to restore his security cover, which he claims was withdrawn or reduced.
Taking a serious view of the matter, the court observed that the security of a public representative cannot be altered without a proper assessment of potential threats. The bench also issued notices to both the Punjab government and the central government, seeking their responses.
The court further directed the Punjab government to ensure adequate security for Harbhajan Singh and his family until the next hearing. It questioned the basis on which the security review was conducted and also sought details regarding the incident in which the word “traitor” was reportedly written outside his residence.
The court has asked the authorities to submit their justification for the security changes and provide a threat assessment report in the next hearing. The matter is scheduled for further hearing on May 12 at the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
