“Today, I am stepping down as the captain of the Indian women’s cricket team across all formats. It is not an easy decision. It carries years of memories, emotions, sacrifices and moments that will stay with me for a lifetime,” Harmanpreet wrote in her message.

Harmanpreet has led India in five Tests, 51 ODIs and 155 T20Is. Her final assignment as captain came last month in Nisshin, where she guided India to their second consecutive Asian Games gold medal.

Her decision to relinquish the captaincy came a day after she met BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia in Guwahati along with India vice-captain Smriti Mandhana and head coach Amol Muzumdar.

The meeting focused on the future roadmap of the Indian women’s cricket team. Harmanpreet’s decision to step down as captain now marks a significant change in the leadership structure of the national side.

She is expected to continue contributing to the Indian team in her role as a player.
