A disturbing incident outside Kapurthala’s historic Mata Shri Bhadra Kali Temple has triggered outrage after a video showing a helpless woman being assaulted with slippers and kicks went viral on social media.
According to eyewitnesses, the woman was sitting near the temple gate with several children when the children allegedly touched a parked motorcycle while playing. The motorcycle owner reportedly became furious and began attacking the woman.
Viral video shows the accused repeatedly hitting the woman with slippers while devotees and passersby try to intervene. Even after people attempted to stop him, the man allegedly kicked the woman, drawing strong condemnation from local residents and social media users.
After the video surfaced online, Kapurthala Police took suo motu cognizance of the matter and began an investigation. During the probe, the accused was identified as Vikas Sharma, a resident of Shekhupur, who allegedly runs a shop directly opposite the temple.
DSP Dr. Sheetal Singh said that once the accused was identified in the preliminary investigation, legal proceedings were initiated immediately. A case has been registered at City Police Station under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) on the basis of the viral video.
Police teams conducted raids at the accused’s house and shop, but he was found absconding. Officials said continuous efforts are being made to trace him, and teams are searching several possible hideouts.
The incident has raised serious concerns about public safety and the treatment of vulnerable people around religious places, with many residents demanding strict and swift action against the accused.
