A tragic incident unfolded in Himachal Pradesh’s Kullu district after a 20-year-old youth from Punjab lost his life while trying to save two friends from the Beas River in Bhuntar.

According to officials, the incident took place around 6:30 pm on Friday when two youths, identified as Katiya and Sonu from Kapurthala, accidentally fell into the river. Seeing them struggling in the fast-flowing water, their friends Gaurav and Sumit immediately jumped in to rescue them.

Sumit successfully helped both youths reach safety, but he himself was caught in the strong current and swept away. Gaurav was later pulled out of the river by local residents and was rushed for medical treatment before being referred to Kullu, where his condition remains critical.

A search operation was launched on Friday evening, but rescuers were unable to locate Sumit before nightfall. After being informed by the police, the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) and local administration resumed the search operation on Saturday morning.

The rescue teams recovered Sumit’s body during the operation. He was identified as Sumit, son of Ravi, a resident of Kala Singha Tratak village in Kapurthala, Punjab.

Family members said Sumit had been living in Bhuntar on rent and worked in the garment business. His aunt, Reenu, said the two friends he saved were also engaged in the clothing trade.

The incident has left the local community and the victim’s family in deep shock, with many remembering Sumit for his courageous attempt to save the lives of his friends.
