Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday spoke to Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar and praised his courage, presence of mind and composure during a critical in-flight emergency.
During the conversation, Modi told Captain Smit that the entire country was praying for him and that the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra was being chanted for his good health.
Prime Minister said Captain Smit’s courage, judgment and calmness had helped save many lives. He added that India could take pride in being a nation where people are willing to risk their own lives to save others.
Captain Smit became emotional during the conversation and told the Prime Minister that he had been reciting the Hanuman Chalisa during the difficult situation.
Captain Smit was the pilot of a Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv when the co-pilot reportedly suffered an attack during the flight. Despite the challenging circumstances, Captain Smit remained composed and handled the situation with courage and presence of mind.
His actions helped ensure the safety of all 174 people on board, according to the account of the incident.
