Panic spread across Buddhakhera village in Haryana’s Hisar district on Saturday when a bolt of lightning struck the upper room (chaubara) of a house belonging to local resident Pyarelal Dudi during a spell of changing weather conditions.
According to villagers, the lightning strike was accompanied by a powerful explosion that caused extensive damage to the electrical system installed in the chaubara. The wiring, switches and other electrical fittings were reportedly burnt and badly damaged due to the sudden surge of electricity.
The impact of the strike was so intense that cement peeled off from several portions of the walls and roof, with debris falling inside the structure.
Eyewitnesses said the sound of the lightning strike was extremely loud, frightening nearby residents, who immediately rushed to the spot. On reaching the house, they found the electrical fittings charred and parts of the room damaged by the force of the strike.
Fortunately, no one was present in the upper room at the time of the incident, and a major tragedy was narrowly avoided. The house owner and villagers later inspected the damage caused by the lightning.
Residents expressed shock after seeing the extent of destruction inside the house. They said the incident highlights the importance of taking precautions during rain and thunderstorms.
Villagers appealed to people to avoid open areas, trees and electrical appliances during lightning activity and to stay in a safe shelter whenever possible to prevent such accidents.
