A married woman allegedly died by suicide after facing harassment from her in-laws in Ludhiana’s Guru Arjun Dev Nagar area. The woman, identified as Mandeep Kaur, allegedly hanged herself from a ceiling fan using a dupatta at her home on September 4.
Based on a complaint filed by her brother Sandeep Kumar, police have registered an FIR against her husband Arvinder Kumar, mother-in-law Kamlesh Rani and father-in-law Krishan Lal under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
According to the complaint, Mandeep was married to Arvinder Kumar on December 6, 2014. Her brother alleged that she had been facing physical and mental harassment from her husband and in-laws for some time. A court case between Mandeep and her husband was also pending over their dispute.
Sandeep told police that Mandeep had attended a court hearing in Ludhiana on April 3, 2026. He alleged that during the hearing, her husband threatened her and told her that he would not provide her any financial support, either through the court or otherwise.
According to police, Mandeep later told her family about the incident and remained distressed. On September 4, she allegedly took the extreme step at her residence.
Police from Division Number 7 reached the spot after receiving information and recovered a suicide note, a dupatta, a pair of scissors and a wooden table from the scene.
An FIR (No. 216) has been registered on the complaint of the deceased woman’s brother. Police said an investigation is underway and further legal action will be taken based on the findings.
