Punjab government has so far released around ₹255 crore in financial assistance for persons with disabilities, aimed at supporting their dignity, security and ability to lead self-reliant lives.
Social Security, Women and Child Development Minister Dr Baljit Kaur said the Punjab government believes that disability should not become a barrier to a person's dreams, dignity or progress. She said the government is working not only to provide financial assistance but also to promote confidence, self-reliance and equal opportunities for persons with disabilities.
According to the minister, around 2.84 lakh beneficiaries are currently receiving regular financial assistance under the scheme. The support helps beneficiaries meet their day-to-day needs and live with dignity.
Dr Baljit Kaur further said that the Punjab government has allocated ₹498.16 crore in the current financial year to further strengthen the financial assistance scheme for persons with disabilities. She described the allocation as a reflection of the government's commitment to social security and welfare.
The minister said the Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab government is ensuring that the benefits of welfare schemes reach every eligible beneficiary in a transparent and timely manner.
“Any sensitive and progressive society is judged by how strongly it stands with its most vulnerable citizens,” Dr Baljit Kaur said, adding that the Punjab government would continue working to ensure dignity, security and equal opportunities for every person with a disability.
Dr Baljit Kaur also appealed to persons with disabilities and their families to make maximum use of the welfare schemes being offered by the state government.
