A major fire broke out at a mattress manufacturing factory located on Basti Peer Dad Road under Basti Bawa Khel police station limits in Jalandhar on Thursday morning, triggering panic in the area and prompting a large-scale firefighting operation.
According to officials, the fire erupted around 9 a.m. when smoke was first noticed rising from inside the factory premises. Local residents and workers quickly alerted authorities and rushed to evacuate employees trapped inside the unit. Around 12 people were safely rescued from the factory in time, preventing a potentially serious tragedy.
The blaze spread rapidly due to the highly flammable nature of mattresses and other materials stored inside the factory. Thick black smoke and towering flames engulfed the premises within minutes, causing alarm among nearby residents. Witnesses said the smoke was visible from nearly two kilometres away.
Upon receiving information, multiple teams from the Fire Department reached the spot and launched an intensive firefighting operation. Given the severity of the fire, nearly 10 fire tenders were pressed into service. Firefighters battled the flames from several directions using continuous water jets in an effort to bring the situation under control.
Preliminary investigations suggest that a short circuit may have triggered the fire. However, authorities have not yet confirmed the exact cause. The extent of property damage is also being assessed.
Meanwhile, personnel from Basti Bawa Khel police station reached the site and initiated an investigation into the incident. Further details are awaited as officials continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the fire.
