An encounter broke out between the Mohali CIA team and a wanted criminal near the Saneta Police Post on Wednesday. Acting on a tip-off, the CIA team had laid a trap in an isolated area.

According to police, when the team attempted to stop the accused, who was travelling in an Alto taxi, he allegedly opened fire at the policemen, firing three rounds. The police retaliated, during which the accused sustained a gunshot wound to his leg. He was rushed to Civil Hospital, Mohali, where his condition was reported to be stable.

SSP Varun Sharma, addressing a press conference at the encounter site, said three pistols were recovered from the accused. The weapons included two 9mm pistols and one Glock pistol. The SSP termed the recovery of the Glock serious and said police were conducting a detailed investigation into the weapon and its source.

The accused has been identified as Gurditt Singh, a native of Tarn Taran who had been residing in the Kharar area for some time. Police said he was wanted in connection with several criminal cases.

According to SSP Sharma, police had received credible intelligence that Gurditt Singh, along with his associates, was allegedly planning a major extortion-related crime in Mohali district. The police intervention reportedly foiled the plan.

Police have also gathered information about two associates of the accused. Teams led by SP Operations Akash and SP-D Saurav Jindal are conducting raids at suspected locations to arrest them.

SSP said police are also investigating the accused's alleged gangster handler and wider criminal network. Once his condition stabilises, he will be questioned about his involvement in previous criminal incidents.
