In a tragic incident, a 36-year-old woman allegedly killed her three children before dying by suicide at her rented home in Mansa district on Thursday, police said.
According to police, the woman had been living with her mother-in-law and her three children after her husband died of illness four years ago. She was the family's sole breadwinner and worked as a daily wage labourer to support them.
On receiving information, City-2 Police reached the spot and launched an investigation.
Investigating Officer Kulwant Singh of City-2 Police Station said that preliminary findings suggest the woman first administered poison to her children and then allegedly strangled them before hanging herself from a ceiling fan.
Police said the family had been facing severe financial hardship since the death of her husband, making it increasingly difficult to manage household expenses. Relatives also told investigators that Sandeep Kaur had been under significant mental stress in recent months.
The deceased have been identified as Sandeep Kaur (36), her daughters Moto Kaur (13) and Kalu (8), and her son Vishwas (around 18 months old).
The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination, and police said further investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
A relative, Roshan Singh, said he learned about the tragedy after his son found the family's child crying outside the house. When they entered the home, they found Sandeep Kaur hanging from the ceiling. They brought her down and immediately informed the police.
