  • New customs rule aims to boost Nepal’s domestic products but raises concerns for border traders and daily shoppers dependent on Indian markets

Nepal has introduced stricter regulations for people shopping in India, making customs duty (Bhansar) mandatory on goods worth more than ₹100. The move is aimed at promoting domestic products within Nepal. Under the new rule, duties ranging from 5% to 80% may be imposed.

Cross-border trade between India and Nepal has long been a part of everyday life, especially in border regions. The new regulation is expected to directly impact shopping habits and small businesses in these areas. It has also raised concerns among local traders on the Indian side.

Following the directive issued by the government led by Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah’s administration, there has been a stir in areas along the India-Nepal border. Notably, the order does not provide any exemption even to NGOs or government institutions.

Local authorities are spreading awareness about the new rule through loudspeaker announcements. A large number of people living in border areas depend on markets in both countries for their daily needs, often purchasing cheaper goods from across the border.

Traders fear that the decision could negatively affect small businesses operating in these regions.
