Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Wednesday inaugurated a new five-storey government school building for girls in Malerkotla, describing it as a special Independence Day gift for Punjab’s daughters.
The project, sanctioned at ₹6.39 crore, was completed for ₹6.34 crore, saving ₹5.25 lakh from the public exchequer. The school includes smart classrooms, a library, common rooms and modern washroom facilities.
Mann said the new building would bring quality education closer to girls in Malerkotla and nearby villages and strengthen the state’s education infrastructure. He highlighted that 882 government school students cleared NEET and 361 qualified JEE, calling it evidence of the changing education landscape in Punjab.
He also said more than 15,000 girls are being provided special bus services so that distance does not become a barrier to their studies.
Chief Minister said the school reflects the government’s focus on education, healthcare, employment, infrastructure and women’s welfare, adding that Punjab has moved from 27th place in education rankings in 2022 to the top position in the country through initiatives such as Schools of Eminence and teacher training programmes.
