A breach in the Sanour Rajwaha canal at Suniarheri village in Punjab’s Patiala district has flooded nearly 100 acres of paddy fields, causing significant losses to farmers.
According to local farmers, they had repeatedly informed the irrigation department about the poor condition of the canal, but timely action was not taken. They alleged that the delay in repairs resulted in heavy economic damage.
Farmers said a large volume of water entered the fields after the canal breached, submerging standing paddy crops. Following the alert, only two irrigation department workers reportedly reached the spot. They attempted to stop the flow using soil-filled sacks, but the effort failed because of the strong water current.
Villagers claimed that more than 24 hours had passed since the incident, yet permanent repair work had not begun. They also pointed out that the same rajwaha had breached twice earlier, but no lasting repairs were carried out despite previous incidents.
Residents and farmers have demanded immediate restoration of the canal and compensation for the crop losses, saying the damage could have been avoided if preventive measures had been taken in time.
