Punjab government on Saturday approved several key measures to strengthen healthcare services and address staff shortages in government health institutions. A Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann approved the creation of 251 new posts across government hospitals and health institutions.
Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema briefed the media about the decisions following the Cabinet meeting. Of the 251 posts, 33 have been approved for the Sub-Divisional Hospital in Chamkaur Sahib, 19 for the Health Department in Malerkotla, 80 for Medical and Dental Officers, and 119 for Sub-Divisional Hospitals and newly established Mother and Child Health Centres.
According to the government, the new appointments will help address staff shortages in healthcare institutions and improve the quality and accessibility of medical services for the public.
The 19 posts approved for the Malerkotla Health Department include positions such as Chief Medical Officer, Assistant Civil Surgeon and District Family Welfare Officer, along with other posts. These appointments are considered important for strengthening the health administration in the newly established district.
To improve the availability of doctors in government healthcare facilities, the Cabinet also sanctioned 80 posts for Medical and Dental Officers. Another 119 posts have been created for Sub-Divisional Hospitals and new Mother and Child Health Centres.
Cabinet also approved amendments to rules related to Group-A posts under the Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC) and gave the go-ahead for the creation of new posts. In addition, new Secretariat Assistant posts were approved.
A report related to the Department of Information and Public Relations was also presented before the Cabinet and approved after discussion.
Cabinet further approved the 2026 Custom Milling Policy and procurement-related policy of the Food and Civil Supplies Department. The government said the decision is aimed at streamlining departmental operations and ensuring a smoother procurement process.
