Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has congratulated young badminton sensation Jagsher Singh Khangurra on winning a bronze medal in boys’ singles at the BWF World Junior Championships 2026 in Cairo, Egypt, describing his international achievement as a proud moment for Punjab and an inspiration for aspiring sportspersons.
Mann met the 17-year-old shuttler from Nabha along with his family and congratulated him, his parents and coaching staff on the remarkable performance. Sharing photographs and videos of the meeting on social media platform X, the Chief Minister praised Khangurra’s dedication, discipline and determination, saying his success on the international stage had brought honour to the state.
The Chief Minister said the young player’s achievement demonstrated how hard work and commitment could help athletes compete at the highest level. He expressed confidence that Khangurra’s performance would encourage other youngsters to take up sports seriously and work towards representing India in international competitions. Mann also expressed pride in Punjab’s emerging sporting talent and urged the shuttler to continue his pursuit of excellence.
Khangurra secured the bronze medal after reaching the semi-finals, where he faced Indonesia’s Radithya Bayu Wardhana in a three-game encounter. The 14th-seeded Indian went down 15-6, 13-15, 15-3 to his 31st-seeded opponent in a match lasting 49 minutes. Although the defeat ended his title hopes, his semi-final appearance guaranteed him a place on the podium.
His journey to the last four featured a hard-fought quarter-final victory over Chinese Taipei’s Yuan-Syue Jhuang. After dropping the opening game, Khangurra showed remarkable composure in the second, saving a match point before fighting back to win 6-15, 17-15, 15-12 and secure a medal for India.
With this achievement, Khangurra became the ninth Indian player to win a boys’ singles medal at the World Junior Championships. Ayush Shetty was the last Indian to achieve the feat, claiming bronze in 2023.
Khangurra’s bronze also contributed to India’s overall tally of 13 medals in the individual competition, comprising one gold, five silver and seven bronze medals. India continued its run of winning at least one individual medal in consecutive editions, following Tanvi Sharma’s girls’ singles silver in 2025.
