The Punjab Government has announced a major expansion of its public transport fleet to strengthen connectivity across the state. Finance and Transport Minister Harpal Singh Cheema stated in Chandigarh on Sunday that 659 buses will be added to PRTC and 606 buses to Punbus.

The minister said that 250 buses have already been inducted under the kilometre scheme. The initiative aims to generate more employment opportunities within the state, with priority given to Punjab residents. Under this scheme, private bus owners are allowed to upgrade their vehicles in line with government standards and safety regulations.

To achieve the target of 659 buses for PRTC, the Transport Department is not relying solely on the kilometre scheme. It is also actively pursuing tenders for the purchase of 100 mini buses and 309 standard buses to ensure comprehensive modernization of the transport system.

Providing details about the 606 buses planned for Punbus, Cheema said that 387 buses will be directly added to its regular fleet to meet the growing demand on various routes. The remaining buses will be included under the kilometre scheme to further enhance operational efficiency and route coverage.

He further added that this phase will include 19 Volvo buses and 100 HVAC (air-conditioned) buses to provide passengers with a more comfortable travel experience. Additionally, 100 standard buses will also be added under the kilometre scheme, taking the total number of new buses for Punbus to 606.

The minister emphasized that this historic expansion of both PRTC and Punbus fleets will significantly improve connectivity across Punjab. It will not only offer more comfortable, reliable, and accessible travel to passengers but also boost employment opportunities and increase the state’s revenue.
