Punjab Police Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Pawan Kumar Sharma died during treatment in Amritsar after sustaining serious injuries in a scooter collision on August 30. Sharma, who had been admitted to hospital for the past 12 days, suffered a severe head injury and remained in critical condition. He was reportedly unable to speak and was on a ventilator.
Sharma, a resident of Amritsar, was posted with the traffic police on Lawrence Road. According to police, the accident took place around 1:45 pm near Celebration Road when he was on duty with other policemen.
Police said Sharma attempted to stop a speeding scooter by signalling with his hand. When the rider failed to stop, the ASI moved towards the middle of the road. At the same time, two youths riding another scooter approached from behind and failed to notice Sharma suddenly in their path. Their scooter collided with the ASI, causing both the officer and the two riders to fall onto the road.
CCTV footage of the incident has surfaced. The nearly three-minute video shows Sharma standing with two other policemen before he signals a scooter to stop and moves towards the middle of the road. The first scooter passes without stopping, following which the second scooter carrying two youths hits Sharma.
After the collision, Sharma remained lying on the road while police personnel rushed to help him. The two scooter riders also fell but later got up on their own and left the spot on their scooter. Meanwhile, the policemen arranged a stretcher and shifted the injured ASI to hospital.
SHO Civil Lines Mohit Kumar had earlier said police were trying to trace the scooter riders and conducting raids at their possible hideouts. Initial information suggested that Sharma had been hit by a car, but the investigation later established that the accident involved an Activa scooter.
Police are continuing efforts to identify and trace the two scooter riders.
