In a major crackdown on corruption, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau has arrested ASI Satroop Singh, posted at the Cyber Crime Police Station in Bathinda, and Gurcharan Singh, reader to the station’s SHO, for allegedly accepting a ₹1 lakh bribe. A case has been registered against both accused at the Vigilance Bureau Police Station in Mohali.
According to Vigilance Bureau officials, the complainant’s son is facing a case registered at the Cyber Crime Police Station in Bathinda. The accused allegedly demanded ₹1 lakh in exchange for not arresting the complainant’s son, helping him obtain bail from the court, and facilitating a compromise with the opposing party.
Instead of paying the bribe, the complainant approached the Flying Squad-1 of the Vigilance Bureau in Mohali and lodged a complaint. During the preliminary verification, the allegations were found to be genuine.
Following this, the Vigilance team laid a trap in the presence of two official witnesses. As soon as the accused accepted the ₹1 lakh bribe amount from the complainant, the Vigilance officials apprehended both of them red-handed at the spot. The bribe money was also recovered during the operation.
The Vigilance Bureau has registered a case under the relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act at its Mohali police station. Officials said that further investigation is underway to determine whether any other individuals were involved in the bribery network.
